Surfing sports

Among sea sports, windsurfing and kite surfing attract many young travelers spending their vacations at Mui Ne in the resort town of Phan Thiet in the central coastal province of Binh Thuan.

The Full Moon Resort was one of the first resorts to bring these leisure sports to the region in 2001 and it now regularly holds training courses all year to teach travelers quickly how to surf the waves with a board or a kite.

Pascal Lefebure, the resort's manager and a surfing coach with 30 years of experience, told the Daily that Mui Ne has good conditions for surfing sports because the sea is not too calm or too rough.

However, the best season for the sport is after the Lunar New Year during February and March when winds are strong enough for surfers to enjoy all day on the water.

That is the reason why the resort organizes a friendly annual international surfing contest that attracts many surfers from around the world to the Mui Ne region.

Standing on the shore watching surfers play, the sports look easy. However, they are much more difficult for novices who lack basic techniques to control kites or sailboards. Therefore, the resort has opened kite classes to cater to travelers who want to try the exiting sport during their vacations.

Lefebure said that it is up to every learner's ability that a course with basic lessons for surfing can be short or long. It normally takes some five hours to finish, and then the apprentices will be able to enjoy surfing the waves alone at will.

Lefebure said that he has an instruction team that has been selected for their experience and that follow strict safety standards. He said that all instructors are IKO (International Kite-Boarding Organization) certified, and can teach in nine languages.

The resort offers a kite surfing course at prices starting from US$200, inclusive of equipment during the course.
