Rugged magnificence of Bac Me
Located 56 km from the northernmost mountain town of Ha Giang Province, Bac Me District is sure to captivate all who visit.
The small, rough and sloping lanes charm tourists with wild sunflowers and green forest cover.
Indeed, Bac Me gives one the feeling of truly getting away from it all.
Bac Me is not the most famous tourist venue in Ha Giang since it possesses neither the gorgeous terraced fields of Hoang Su Phi nor the bright colorful markets like Dong Van and Meo Vac.
But what the area lacks in bustling activity, it more than makes up for in its rugged beauty.
Distinctive splendor
Since the Na Hang dam was closed a few months ago, the water level has been steadily rising, creating a charming lake view.
Fish and other aquatic creatures have begun to flourish giving visitors a once-in-a-life-time opportunity to gaze upon the growing ecosystem.
From the slope entering Bac Me town, the jade green lake is hidden behind a rolling mountain.
Thesea-green water and forest, with a mountainous back travel destination to be sure.
At times, the lake’s surface can be smooth as a mirror.
The peaceful tranquility is interrupted only sporadically by a jumping fish whisking by maidenhair ferns or a bamboo craft drifting along lazily.
Clusters of lush vegetation rise up against the water, framing the lake like a splendid water-color painting.
Bac Me is becoming more popular with tourists now that 20 new businesses have been set up to pro-vide tourists with transport and accommodation.
Lien, the owner of a restaurant on the lake side, says fishermen had recently caught an impressive 70 kg fish.
Such rare and savory seafood like the Hemibagrus (a species of catfish) are also available costing around VND200,000-320,000 (US$12.46-19.93) per kg.
The three hour journey to reach Bac Me from Na Hang hydroelectric dam by boat – which can carry up to 30 travelers at a time – costs around VND2 million (US$124).
Bac Me has four guesthouses that can accommodate up to 200 travelers for VND140,000-160,000 (around $10) per room per night.
Besides visiting the local lakes and streams and enjoying rare and delicious fish dishes, travelers can tour Bac Me’s old town and a French colonial prison among other attractions.
It is also not far to travel to nearby Cao Bang Town, 150 km away.
