Observing the beauty of Highway 28

While traveling over the weekend on National Highway 28 from Di Linh in Lam Dong Province to Phan Thiet in Binh Thuan Province, I saw a group of men riding their Vespas along the scenic road.

The men were from Binh Thuan Province and greeted us when we snapped pictures of them. A few times along the winding road, they passed our car to showoff their mopeds. We stopped numerous times along the 100 kilometer stretch to snap beautiful photos and film the magnificent scenery.

Slews of old trees covering the hills and mountains are a wondrous site while traveling along the road that links the Central Highlands to the Central region of Vietnam. Trees whose leaves fell during the winter rise from the thick forests. Soon, young buds will bloom as spring approaches. There are also trees with burgundy leaves that add vibrant colors to the forest.

The Cham and other ethnic groups reside in the buffer zones of the area. They can usually be seen shouldering bamboo baskets toward their farms, traveling into the forest in the morning or heading home with loads of firewood.

In the afternoon, children play in front of their homes and receive their parents coming home from the farm or forest. In the evenings, children and adults gather at the public well for bathing and washing clothes.

From personal experience, I can say that traveling by car along the hills and mountains is not the best way to experience Highway 28. To properly admire the forests and attractions, motor biking and cycling are the best means of transportation. The road is also a good shortcut for traveling between Dalat and Mui Ne.

The road joining National Highway 20 in Di Linh is the first road to link the Central Highlands and the coastal areas of Vietnam. The road was built by the French from 1899-1914 based on the trail French explorer Alexandre Yersin traveled.

Yersin began his quest to discover Di Linh Plateau in 1891 and traveled from Phan Son Commune in Binh Thuan Province to the plateau before making his way to the coast.
